What do single cell organisms do?
perform all essential life functions inside the boundaries of a single cell.
1 of 11
Why can single celled organisms not be totally efficient at all life functions?
Because each life function requires a specific type of cellular structure.
2 of 11
Why are the cells of multi-cellular organisms each adapted for perform a specific role?
because no one cell can provide the best conditions for all functions.
3 of 11
Why do organisms function efficiently?
Because all cells are specifically adapted to their own particular function and perform it effectively.
4 of 11
What is a tissue?
A collection of similar cells perform a specific function.
5 of 11
Give 2 examples of tissues:
Epithelial tissues: found in animals and are sheets of cells that line the surface of organs and have a protective or secretory function. The Xylem in a plant which is made of a number of cell typesand is used to transport water and mineral ions.
6 of 11
what is an organ?
A combination of tissues that are coordinated to perform a range of functions.
7 of 11
give 3 tissues that the stomach is made up of?
Muscle - to churn and mix stomach contents, Epithelium - to protect the wall and produce secretions, Connective tissue - to hold other tissues
8 of 11
What tissues make up a plant leaf (which is an organ)?
Palisade mesophyll layer - made up of leaf palisade cells that photosynthesize. Spongy mesophyll- for gaseous diffusion. Epidermis - to protect the leaf and allow gaseous diffusion. Phloem - to transport organic materials away from leaf.
9 of 11
What is an organ system?
when organs work together as a SINGLE unit.
10 of 11
Give an example of 3 organ systems in the body?
The digestive system - digests and processes food, made up of salivary gland, oesophagus, stomach. RESPIRATORY system - breathing and gas exchange, made up of trache, bronchi, lungs. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM - pumps blood. Includes heart, arteries, veins.
