What is Cell Differentiation?
Cells in a multicellular organism are initially identical, but as mature each cell takes on own characteristics that will help do its function. Become SPECIALISED in structure to suit its function, lose ability to switch function so rely on others to
1 of 8
How do cells differentiate?
Each cell contains the genes needed to develop into any one of the different cells in an organism. But only a few genes get switched on (expressed) in the cell. Different genes switched on cause different characteristics, the rest are switched off
2 of 8
What are TISSUES?
Tissues are a group or collection of similar cells that perform a specific function
3 of 8
What are some examples of tissues?
Epithelial Tissues - in plants and animals, protective or secretory function. Xylem - occurs in plants, made up of number of different cell types, transports water and ions/minerals + gives mechanical support
4 of 8
What are ORGANS?
Organs are a group or collection of tissues that are coordinated to perform a variety of functions, but one main function
5 of 8
What are some examples of organs?
VEINS/ARTERIES: made of different types of tissues: epithelia, muscle and connective tissue. STOMACH: Muscle, churn up content; epithelium, protect stomach wall+produce secretions; connective tissue, hold together other tissues. LEAF in plants
6 of 8
What are ORGAN SYSTEMS?
Organ Systems are groups or collections of organs that work together to perform particular functions efficiently
7 of 8
What are some examples of organ systems?
In humans, DIGESTIVE: digests + processes food - salivary glands, oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, pancreas + liver. RESPIRATORY: breathing + gas exchange - Trachea, bronchi + lungs. CIRCULATORY: Pumps + circulates blood - heart, arteries, veins
