Cells and tissues

From the IGCSE Edexcel Biology and Human Biology specification.

?
A central nucleus
This has two main functions: (1) to control the activities of the rest of the cell (2) to store the information needed to make new cells and the whole organism
1 of 10
Cytoplasm
The rest of the cell is filled with a jelly-like fluid. This is where most of the chemical reactions of life called metabolism occur.
2 of 10
Cell membrane
The cell is surronded be an extremely thin, fragile layer called plasma. This membrane controls what enters and leaves the cell, so that the composition of the inside can be kept constant.
3 of 10
Cell wall
It is a thick tough layer outside the cell membrane. It is made of cellulose (a tough material) that provides the roughage/fibre in our diets.
4 of 10
Chloroplasts
Leaf cells have green structures in the cytoplasm, which absorb light energy to make the plants food in a process called photosynthesis.
5 of 10
Vacuole
It is filled with a watery liquid called cell sap, a store of dissolved sugars, mineral ions and other solutes.
6 of 10
Mitochondria
These are sausage-shaped organelles where most of the energy of the cell is released in a process called respiration. They carry out some of the reactions of respiration to release energy that the cell can use to do all its other processes.
7 of 10
Endoplasmic reticulum
Abbreviated ER. This is a whole network of membranes, similar to the outer cell membrane which runs throughout the cytoplasm transporting materials from place to place.
8 of 10
Ribosomes
These are minute round granules stuck on to parts of the endoplasmic reticulum, forming rough endoplasmic reticulum. They are the site of the construction of protein molecules, in a process called protein synthesis.
9 of 10
Golgi bodies
These are stacks of ER membranes, and are where the cell makes materials other than proteins, and then exports them outside the cell. They are common in cells which secrete (make and export) chemicals, like those in our glands.
