What are the major features of the membrane?
sheet-like bilayer of lipids containing a mosaic of proteins, held together by non-covalent interactions, asymmetric, fluid in structure
1 of 6
Describe lipids?
soluble in organic solvents, non-polymeric, associate together by non-covalent forces
2 of 6
What are the four main types of lipid?
free fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids and steroids.
3 of 6
Describe free fatty acids
one carboxylic acid group, weak acids that are normally around a neutral pH, variable chain length 14-24 C atoms.
4 of 6
How does the melting point of fatty acids increase?
chain length, but decreases with the number of double bonds. Therefore a long chain saturated fatty acid will have a high melting temperature
5 of 6
What are sphingolipids?
built around sphingosine, often glycosylated to form complex glycolipids (gangliosides & cerebrosides),
