What are the two mechanisms of facilitated passive transport?
carrier mediated and pore mediated.
1 of 6
What are ionophores?
Small antibiotic peptides produced by certain bacteria. Can dissolve in membranes and catalyze transport of cations. are used as models for facilitated passive transport
2 of 6
What does valinomycin do?
Increase permeability of K+ ions, Is a cyclic peptide with folded conformation. Surface rich in hydrophobic CH3 groups, interior ring of N and O
3 of 6
What is gramicidin A?
A cation specific pore. Causes normal distribution of K+ and Na+ between environment and cell interior to break down.
4 of 6
How do glucose transporters work?
Solute must bind in a gated mechanism causing a conformational change that is required to move the solute through the protein. 3-OH binds to the exterior and 6-OH binds to the interior.
5 of 6
What does active transport require?
a pore, selective gate and a motor.
