Glial
The most abundant cell types in the CNS. They're supportive cells - they do not conduct electrical impulses

Neuron
Cells that conduct electrical impulses - signalling cells

Astrocyte
These cells have numerous projections that link neurons to their blood supply while forming the BBB. They signal each other via gap junctions. They move around K+ ions to ensure the correct environment for action potentials (spatial buffering)

Oligodendrocyte
These cells myelinate multiple axons in the CNS - important for fast, efficient signalling

Schwann cell
These cells myelinate one axon in the PNS. They have an outer neurolemma (cytoplasm on the outer layer of the cell)

Microglia
Phagocytic cells involved in the immune system

Ependyma
These cells line the ventricular system. They are ciliated to waft away cerebrospinal fluid which circulates around the brain and down the spinal cord
