What is a cell?
Single, small entity; can be specialised. Made up of organelles and is either classified as a prokaryote or a eukaryote.
1 of 17
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells for a specific function, such as a muscle or a nerve tissue
2 of 17
What is an organ?
Group of tissues co-ordinated to perform variety of functions, with one major one in the body
3 of 17
What is an organ system?
Lots of organs working together as a single unit
4 of 17
What does mitotic division of eggs lead to?
Same genes passed down, so different genes can be "switched on" in different cells - cell differentiation
5 of 17
What two things vary in cells?
Organelle number and shape
6 of 17
What to cells evolve to do?
More suited to function, depend on other cells for other functions, specially adapted
7 of 17
What is the general role of the tissue?
Collection of cells with intercellular secretion. Specialised to perform 1+ function with similar cells.
8 of 17
What is the function of xylem in plants?
Transports water, mineral ions. Gives mechanical support
9 of 17
What is the function of connective tissue?
Adds support to bone.
10 of 17
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Lines organs for protection or for secretions.
11 of 17
What is the function of muscle or nerve tissue?
Muscle for bodily movement, nerve for quick communication.
12 of 17
What is the role of the stomach organ in the human?
Muscles to churn food. Epithelium to protect wall. Connective tissue to hold other tissues together.
13 of 17
What is the role/features of the plant leaf?
Palisade mesophyll for photosynthesis. Spongy mesophyll for gaseous diffusion. Phloem to transport organic materials away from the plant, xylem to transport water/ions to the plant.
14 of 17
An organ system that allows for breathing and gas exchange through the lungs, the trachea, and the bronchi?
Respiratory system
15 of 17
An organ system that digests and processes food through the salivary glands, the intestines, the stomach, and the oesophagus?
Digestive system
16 of 17
An organ system that pumps blood through arteries, veins, and the heart?
Circulatory system
