cell structures

?
what are animal cells made up of?
eukaryotic cells
1 of 22
what are eukaryotic cells?
they have a nucleus and other structures which are surrounded by membranes.
2 of 22
what is a cytoplasm in an animal cell?
A jelly-like material that contains dissolved nutrients and salts called organelles. it is where most of the chemical reactions happen.
3 of 22
what is a nucleus in an animal cell?
contains genetic material, including DNA, which controls cells activities.
4 of 22
what is a cell membrane in an animal cell?
it is permeable to some substances but not to others and so controls the movement in and out of the cells.
5 of 22
what is the mitochondria in an animal cell?
organelles that contain the enzymes for respiration, and where most energy is released in respiration
6 of 22
what is a ribosome in an animal cell?
tiny organelles where protein synthesis occurs
7 of 22
what are plant cells made up of?
plants are made up of eukaryotic cells
8 of 22
what cell structures do animal and plant cells have in common?
the nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes.
9 of 22
what is a chloroplast in a plant cell?
organelle that contains green pigment, chlorophyll which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis. contains the enzymes needed for photosynthesis.
10 of 22
what is a cell wall in a plant cell?
plant and bacterial cell walls provide structure and protection. only plant cell walls are made from cellulose.
11 of 22
what is a permanent vacuole in a plant cell?
filled with sap to help keep the cell swollen
12 of 22
do animals have a vacuole?
they have vacuoles but these are small and temporary.
13 of 22
qualities of a bacterial cell
they are single celled, and are prokaryotic
14 of 22
what is a prokaryotic cell?
do not have a nucleus or any other structures which are surrounded membranes.
15 of 22
what cell structures do bacterial cells share with plant and animal cells?
cytoplasm and cell membrane
16 of 22
what are the unique structures of a bacterial cell?
chromosomal DNA, plasmid DNA, flagella and cell wall
17 of 22
chromosomal DNA?
the DNA of bacterial cells is found loose in the cytoplasm. it is called chromosomal DNA and is not contained within a nucleus.
18 of 22
plasmid DNA?
bacteria have small, closed circles of DNA called plasmids present in their cytoplasm. unlike the chromosomal DNA, plasmid DNA can move from one bacterium to another
19 of 22
flagella?
bacteria can have multiple flagella. these can rotate and move in a whip-like motion to move the bacterium.
20 of 22
cell wall
plant and animal cell walls provide structure and protection. only plant cell walls are made from cellulose.
21 of 22
why do bacterial cells do not divide by mitosis?
they copy themselves by binary fission. the process is similar but the name is different due to prokaryotic bacteria are very different from other eukaryotic plant and animal cells.
