Cell structure and function

?
What are the 3 main functions of the nucleus?
1) Produce mRNA and tRNA for protein synthesis 2) Retain genetic material 3) Ribosomal RNA and ribosomes manufactured in the nucleolus
1 of 13
What are the 2 main functions of the RER?
1) Provide large SA for synthesis of proteins and glycoproteins 2) Provide pathway for transport of materials (especially protein) throughout the cell.
2 of 13
What are the 2 main functions of the SER?
1) Synthesise, store & transport lipids 2) Synthesise, store & transport carbohydrates
3 of 13
What are the 5 main functions of the golgi apparatus? *
1) Produce glycoproteins 2) Produce secretory enzymes (abundant in epithelium) 3) Secrete carbohydrates (e.g. for plant cell walls) 4) Transport, modify & store lipids 5) Form Lysosomes
4 of 13
What are lysozymes?
Enzymes that hydrolyse bacterial cell walls
5 of 13
What are the 4 main functions of lysosomes?
1) Hydrolyse ingestions of phagocytes 2) Release enzymes to outside of cell to destroy material around cell 3) Digest worn out organelles 4) Autolysis
6 of 13
What are the 3 main functions of the cell wall? *
1) Prevent cell bursting under pressure created by inward osmosis 2) Provide mechanical strength 3) Allow water to pass along it - aids movement of H2O through plant.
7 of 13
What is the membrane around a vacuole called?
Tonoplast
8 of 13
What does a plant vacuole contain?
A solution of mineral salts, sugars, amino acids, wastes and sometimes pigments.
9 of 13
What are the 3 main functions of the vacuole?
1) Make plant cells turgid 2) Sugars & amino acids may be a temporary food store 3) Pigments may colour petals to attract pollinating insects
10 of 13
How do bacteria store food reserves?
As glycogen granules and lipid droplets in the cytoplasm
11 of 13
What is the advantage of plasmids to bacterial cells?
Can reproduce themselves and may give resistance to certain chemicals e.g. antibiotics
12 of 13
What does the slime capsule allow groups of bacteria to do?
Stick together for protection from enzymes/chemicals
