What does a partially permeable membrane do?
Controls movement of substances in and out of the cell/organelle and contains receptors for other molecules such as hormones and enables adjacent cells to stick together
1 of 11
What gives the membrane structure the fluid mosaic name? (protein icebergs in a lipid sea)
Fluidity of membrane and mosaic arrangement of the proteins
2 of 11
What is the basic structure of all cell membranes including cell surface membranes and membrane around organelles?
The same
3 of 11
What does the membrane include?
Bilayer of Phospholipid molecules, Cholesterol, intrinsic (span bilayer for carrier proteins) and extrinsic (partially embedded in bilayer) proteins, glycolipids and glycoproteins.
4 of 11
What do the phospholipid bilayer do?
Hydrophilic head points outwards and hydrophobic tails point inwards. Structure allows lipid soluble molecules to pass through the membrane but not water soluble molecules. Also means membrane is flexible and self-sealing.
5 of 11
What do the proteins do?
Some float in bilayer whereas others may be bound to other components in membrane or structures inside the cell. Aid movement across membrane, provide mechanical support and act in conjunction with glycolipids as receptors
6 of 11
What does the Cholesterol do?
Reduces permeability and fluidity of membrane making it more stable. Makes it rigid which reduces lateral movement of phospholipids. Prevents leakage of water and dissolved ions from cell as is hydrophobic
7 of 11
What do the Glycolipids do?
Extend from surface of cell (sugar attached to lipid) Acts as a cell surface receptor for certain molecules. also allows cells to adhere to one another to form tissues
8 of 11
What do Glycoproteins do?
Sugars attached to Extrinsic proteins that function in cell signalling or cell attachment. Cell surface receptors and neurotransmitters- allow cells to recognise one another as well as attach to form tissue
9 of 11
What dissolve in water?
Ions and polar molecules
10 of 11
What dissolve in lipids?
Non charged molecules
