The growth period between cell division, consists of stages G1, S and G2
2 of 12
State a couple of things that occur during interphase
DNA is replicated, Protein synthesis, mitochondria grow and divide increasing in number ( same with chloroplasts)
3 of 12
What happens in G1 stage?
The first growth stage: Organelles replicate and cell grows in size
4 of 12
What happens during S stage?
The synthesis phase: DNA is replicated
5 of 12
What happens during G2 stage?
The second growth phase: Cell continues to grow, energy stores increase, replicated DNA is checked for errors
6 of 12
Briefly describe what happens in the mitotic phase?
Mitosis and cytokinesis
7 of 12
What is cytokinesis?
When the cytoplasm splits and the two cells are produced
8 of 12
What is the G0 stage?
The resting phase: where a cell temporarily or permanently leaves the cell cycle
9 of 12
Why might a cell go into the G0 phase?
Differentiation- when a cell becomes specialised and so it is no longer able to divide or If the DNA is damaged
10 of 12
What are checkpoints?
Points in the cell cycle which check if everything in that stage has been completed correctly so it is able to move on to the next stage
11 of 12
What 3 check points are there?
G1 checkpoint (checks cell size, nutrients, growth factors, DNA damage) G2 checkpoint (cell size, DNA replication, DNA damage) Spindle assembly point (chromosome attachment to spindle)
