?
Joseph (2004)
concordance rates for schizophrenia between DZ twins 7% and MZ twins 40%- if it was solely genetics we should see much higher concordance rates for MZ twins
1 of 8
Rosenthal (1963)
quadruplets study- all had schizophrenia (must be something to do with genetics), but different severities and different ages so not 100%- ignores environmental causes, poor home life parents had depression etc.
2 of 8
Tienari (2000)
adoption studies- adopted children whose birth mother has schizophrenia have 6% chance of getting it, but this number was reduced if they were raised by a supportive family- CG had 2% of getting it even without schizophrenic moms
3 of 8
Sterling and Hellewell (1999)
schizophrenic behaviour is not similar to infantile behaviour (argument against Freud)
4 of 8
Bateson (1956)
double bind theory- parents of schizophrenics communicate destructively e.g. angrily shouting 'I love you'- however this theory has little evidence to support it
5 of 8
Berger (1965)
double bind theory- schizophrenics have a high recall of their parents acting in a double bind way- however this could be susceptible to social desirability bias
6 of 8
Kavanagh (1992)
interpersonal communication- schizophrenics are more likely to relapse in families with low emotional expression because they need support and stability- this is about recovery not how it is caused
7 of 8
Day et al (1987)
schizophrenics suffer from more stressful life events- cause and effect? maybe schizophrenics can't cope with mildly stressful life events like everyone else, maybe schizophrenia causes them to have more stress
