What was the Babington plot? (1586)
Anthony Babington seemingly plotted to get a group of young Catholics to release Mary, some hoped to make her queen.

When MAry was moved Babington stopped being the courier, him and his friends continued to hear mass and dine together.

Who prosecuted Babington and what was their evidence? (1586)
Sir Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth's spymaster; he used the plot to essentially execute Mary. He used letters and a portrait Babington had painted of him and the group to incriminate the other people.

What did Elizabeth do about the Babington plot? (1586)
Elizabeth hesitated but was eventually pursuaded to have Mary executed in 1587

Was there really ever any threat from the Babington plot? (1586)
Not really, Babington stopped after Mary was moved but Walsingham provided letters etc. to incriminate them and prove that Mary was encouraging the overthrow of Elizabeth and that she was guilty of treason.

What was the Throckmorton plot? (1583)
Francis Throckmorton went to the continent and built up a network of Catholics including the French Duke of Guise whose forces were supposed to invade england and provoke a rebellion.

Why was the Throckmorton plot worrying to Elizabeth? (1583)
It seemed more likely that it would be France not Spain that would invade; Mary was Queen of France, her mother was Marie of Guise.

Why was the Throckmorton plot worrying to Protestants? (1583)
Dutch Protestant leader William of Orange assassinated by Catholic fanatic in 1584. If Elizabeth was assassinated, Mary was the next in line to the throne and she was Catholic so would undo everything the Protestants had worked for.

What did the Protestants do after the Throckmorton plot? (1584-5)
Created the bond of association - Elizabeth was not married and had no children so Mary would be Queen. If ELizabeth was assassinated, they would murder Mary without trial.

Did Elizabeth do anything after the Throckmorton plot? (1583-5)
No, she said Mary's crimes were not proven and she seemed unwilling to execute a fellow sovereign and cousin in the name of religion.

What was the Ridolfi plot? (1571)
Italian Banker wanted to overthrow English Protestant regime after the release of Norfolk from the tower in 1570. He was in contact with pro-Mary Scots, the Pope, Philip II, and the Duke of Alva. He wanted to kill Elizabeth and replace her with Mary.

Who found out about the Ridolfi plot? (1571)
Sir Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth's spymaster. He found out through torture and intimidation.

What was the result of the Ridolfi plot? (1571) (Who was arrested etc.)
Norfolk was arrested and Elizabeth's Councillors and her Parliament called for the death of Mary and Norfolk. In the end only Norfolk was executed.

Who started the Northern Rebellion? (1569)
Rebellion of Northern Earls lead by Thomas Percy, encouraged by Roberto Ridolfi who had links to Spanish ambassador and the commander of the Spanish forces in the Low Countries and Duke of Alva.

What was the aim of the Northern Rebellion? (1569)
to free Mary from captivity, assassinate Elizabeth and then marry Mary to Norfolk, who could then be King and Queen. Norfolk would then throw off his pretence of Protestantism and the country would once again be re-united with Rome.

Why did the marriage not work? (1569)
Elizabeth refused to give her consent, Norfolk withdrew his estates in Norfolk which only made Elizabeth more suspicious.

Events of the Northern Rebellion? (1569)
Improvised by earls, centered around Durham, wanted to overthrow Elizabeth. 5,000 men, 1,400 horsemen. Government only had 400 ill-equiped horsemen. Rebels decided not to march on York and turned back.

Real objectives or the Rebellion? (1569)
Not interested in the Norfolk/Mary marriage, wanted to restore Catholicism

What was the governments reaction? (1569)
Government was shaken, they didnt really do anything but they were forced to think carefully about the links between Catholicism and treachery.
