They believed that souls spent less time in purgatory if people prayed for them. Chantries were built so that masses could be said for them after their death.

What was the Catholic belief of purgatory?
There was a "halfway house" between hell and heaven known as purgatory. In order to be purged of their sins (committed on earth), souls of the dead would spend time in purgatory, depending on how great their sins were.

Relics were religious objects such as bones of saints or pieces of the cross. Religious centres often had collections of these objects and people made pilgrimage to pray at them.

There were seven sacraments which gave the receiver special grace: Eucharist, Baptism,Conformation,Marriage,Penance,Holy Orders (for someone who was becoming a priest and Extreme Unction (for people who were dying).

What did Catholics believe happened to the soul after death?
After death, a person's soul might go to heaven or hell for eternity. They could only go to heaven if they were free from sin but most people had committed some sins so would go to purgatory.
