What were the aims of Castellow's research?
To test the hypothesis that an attractive defendant is less likely to be seen as guilty. When the victim is attractive, the defendant is more likely to be found guilty. To look for gender differences in jury verdicts depending on attractiveness.

Who were the participants in Castellow's study?
71 male and 74 female students participating for extra credit in their introductory psychology course at East Carolina University.

Describe the procedure in this study
Told they would be reading a sexual harassment case and would have to answer questions on it. Photos of the victim and defendant attached which were previously categorised by a panel as attractive or unattractive on a scale of 1-9.1=very unattractive

9 = very attractive. Dependent variable measured by answering question 'Do you think Mr Radford is guilty of sexual harassment?' Then asked to rate defendant and victim on 11 bipolar scales e.g. dull-exciting, nervous-calm, warm-cold.

What were the findings gathered from Castellow's research?
Physically attractive defendants+victims were rated positively on other personality variables as well. Attractive defendant=56% guilty verdict, 76% if unattractive defendant. Attractive victim=77% guilty verdict, 55% unattractive victim.

What were no significant differences found between?
No significant gender differences were found and both sexes were equally influenced by appearance.

What were the conclusions drawn from this study?
Appearance has a powerful effect in the courtroom, this is supported by lots of other research. Defendant would be well advised to make the best of their appearance when appearing in court.
