People moved to work in the pits and mines so high density houses were built in a grid iron pattern. The area was highly polluted.

Larger houses were built in the inner suburbs and public transport was built.

Driveways and garages were added to houses. In inner city, terraced houses were demolished and replaced by high rise flats and maisonettes.

Outer suburbs were built and the houses were detached and on private roads. Industry closed, increasing unemployment, so council estates were built. (Norley Hall and Beech Hill)

Standishgate had family owned specialist shops, covered market sold convenience and specialist items, open market sold locally grown convenience goods.

Redeveloped into the Galleries, kept covered market, only left small area of open market.

Robin Park was built.

Markets return to Market Street, change 150 units in the Galleries into 26 large units, retain heritage, bigger supermarket with 600 space car park, build a new leisure hub

Wrightington Country Club, Wigan swimming pool, RObin Park, DW Stadium, Mesnes Park, Ashfield PArk, SOccer DOme, Hindley swimming pool, Scotman's Flash and Gathurst Golf Club.
