Hand hygiene, check ID band, check the chart, give RN and isobar handover, get consent, assess IV site before gathering equipment

Locally: Erythema, Phlebitis, Infiltration & Oedema which may indicate infection at the IV site. Systemically: tracking in the vein

What are the Six Rights of Medications you must use when administering IV?
Right Patient, Drug, Dose, Time, Route, Documentation - also, do they have any Allergies??

How do you calculate drops per minute?
Volume (ml) x Drop factor/ time (mins)

What is a Continuous Line and when should it be changed?
It hasnt been disconnected from the patient - should be changed every 72 hours

What is an Intermittent Line and when should it be changed?
One that is stopped and disconnected regularly - should be changed every 24 hours

What should you remember when filling out the documentation afterwards?
Should remember to document and start a Fluid Balance Chart - check every half hour
