What are the first things you should do before changing an IV dressing?

Pt privacy & position, hand hygiene, determine when the dressing was last changed, observe for moisture, look for kinks in line, look for swelling & palpate through dressing to look for inflammation or complaints of pain or burning. Explain procedure

When removing an IV dressing, what do you need to leave in place?

It is important to leave the tape holding the IV line whilst the other dressings are being removed - can remove once sites inspected BUT one hand must hold IV until tape is replaced

When examining the exposed IV site, what are some things to look out for?

Redness, swelling and exudate, infiltration, phlebitis or clots - if observed seek medical advice

How should you clean the IV dressing

Use alcohol and a dressing pack just as though you were cleaning a normal wound.

Observe the functioning of the IV after the dressing change, monitor temp, doc the appearance of IV site, type of dressing & the status of the IV fluid infusion
