what does it believe happens with hospitalisation?
believes it leads to institutionalisation where the patient becomes reliant and dependent and doesnt make decisions for themselves
1 of 12
what does care in the community aim to do?
aims to rehabilitate the patients and make sure they can function as normally as possible in society by providing treatment while the patient lives in the community (at home or in sheltered accomodation)
2 of 12
is medication self administered?
in most cases, yes: medication will be self administered at home but those needing extra support can have assistence
3 of 12
drop-in centres
drop-in centres with care staff are available 24/7 to provide help in day to day life but residents are still encouraged to make decisions on their own
4 of 12
what does the treatment offer?
different agencies provide different services e.g. sheltered accomodation
5 of 12
can the patients go to hospitals at all?
yes, if they really need to. but it is ensured as best as possible that these are only short stays so that the patient can get back into the community as soon as possible
6 of 12
STRENGTH: leff
schizos in long-term sheltered accommodation showed less severe symptoms than those in hospitals
7 of 12
STRENGTH: hospitals
hospitals can worsen symptoms e.g. worsen withdrawal in schizophrenics
8 of 12
STRENGTH: popularity with the patients
patients preferred care in the community to life in the hospital and said it offered them a better quality of life but others may find the situation overwhelming/too challenging
9 of 12
WEAKNESS: leff
found there is an inappropriate between number of hospital services and care in the community services so not enough community places available
10 of 12
WEAKNESS: conflicting advice
because there are lots of different agencies, patients may get different advice because of the lack of co-ordination
11 of 12
WEAKNESS: underfunding
if underfunded, the treatment can prevent the patients from improving especially if staff are shortstaffed as they will not be getting as much care as they need e.g. emergency help lines not being available 24/7
