Cardiovascular system: individual functions

?
What is the systemic circulation?
Refers to the circulation around the rest of the body- except from the heart and lungs
1 of 18
What is pulmonary circulation?
Refers to the circulation around the lungs only
2 of 18
What does the Atrio-ventricular valve do?
It is the valve dividing the atrium and the ventricle. They passively open and close depending on pressure in the chambers
3 of 18
Give the two types of Atrio-ventricular valve:
Right = Tricupsid valve. Left = Mitral valve
4 of 18
What does the Aortic valve do?
Guards the opening of the aorta. It prevents the backflow of blood into the left ventricle when it contracts
5 of 18
What is the Aortic valve made of?
Three semi-lunar cusps
6 of 18
What does the Pulmonary Vein do?
Carries oxygenated blood from lungs to the atrium of the heart
7 of 18
What does the Pulmonary Artery do?
Carries de-oxygenated blood to lung from the heart
8 of 18
What does the Right Ventricle do?
Deoxygentated blood flows from the right atrium to the ventricle which pumps the blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs
9 of 18
What does the Left Ventricle do?
Pumps oxygenated blood via the aorta to the tissues in the body
10 of 18
What does the Aorta do?
The biggest artery in the body. It carries blood to tissues around the body
11 of 18
What does the Right Atrium do?
Receives deoxygenated blood from the Vena cava before flowing into the ventricle
12 of 18
What does the Left Atrium do?
Recieves oxygenated blood from the Pulmonary Vein before flowing into the ventricle
13 of 18
What does the Superior Vena cava do?
Empties blood into the right atrium. It drains the blood from the body's structures above the diaphragm
14 of 18
What does the Inferior Vena Cava do?
Carries blood from the lower half of the body (below the diaphragm) which is then emptied into the right atrium
15 of 18
What does the Sinoatrial Node do?
Generates regular impulses which are electrically unstable which causes them to depolarise/discharge before re-polarising again
16 of 18
What does the Atrioventricular Node do?
Receives electrical impulses from the SAN, delays it for 0.1 seconds for the atria to finish contracting, then it passes into the ventricles
17 of 18
What does the Septum do?
Separates the left and right atria and ventricles. Electrical impulses travel down the septum from the AVN to the purkinje tissues which stimulates the ventricles to contract
