Carbohydrates

?
What is a carbohydrate?
Compounds containing the elements C, H and O, Ratio: (CH2O)n
1 of 6
Give a few functions of carbohydrates
Energy store (starch, glycogen), Structural (cellulose, chitin), Cell recognition, Metabolism
2 of 6
What are the 3 carbohydrate groups?
Monosaccharides (Single sugars), Oligosaccharides (2-10 residues) and polysaccharides (>20 residues)
3 of 6
Monosaccharides
Cannot easily be broken down, basic 'building blocks', other classes of carbs are derived from them, classified according to no. of C atoms and whether an aldehyde (aldose) or a ketone (ketose)
4 of 6
Aldose
Have an aldehyde group (-CHO) on the top C (C1) and CH2OH on the lowest C (different groups of aldose's depending on No. of C atoms, aldohexose, aldopentose etc.)
5 of 6
Ketose
Have a ketone group (-C=O) on the second top C (C2) and CH2OH on the first and last C, (different groups depending on C atom number, ketopentose, ketohexose, etc.)
