Brakes
When the brakes are applies work is done, and the kinetic energy of the car is reduced. This is done by transferring the kinetic energy into heat and sound energy.
1 of 8
Regenerative brakes
Unlike traditional brakes, these work by putting the vehicle's motor into reverse. When the motor is running backwards the wheels of the car slow down. The motor acts as an electric generator, converting the kinetic energy into electrical energy.
2 of 8
In a crash
The car will slow down quickly, and so a lot of kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy in a short amount of time. This can be dangerous for passengers, as there is a big change in momentum.
3 of 8
Crumple zones
The front and the back of a car will crumple in a crash. This transfers the kinetic energy into other forms of energy when the car body is changing shape, and it helps to increase the impact time, which decreases the force of the change in momentum.
4 of 8
Side impact bars
These are strong metal tubes that are inside car door panels. They directs kinetic energy produced by a crash away from the passengers, to other areas of the car.
5 of 8
Seat Belts
They increase the time taken for the passenger to stop, which reduces the forces acting on their chest.
6 of 8
Air bags
These prevent passengers from hitting hard surfaces inside the car.
7 of 8
Power ratings
Cars are given ratings depending on their size and design. The more powerful an engine, the more energy it transfers from fuel, so the faster its top speed.
