A measure of how much can be held in memory.

Everyday things comes in 7s and people can cope with counting 7 dots on a screen.

People can recall 5 words aswell as they can recall 5 letters as they chunk things together.

Participants are accurate when counting 7 dots on a screen but inaccurate when 15 dots are shown.

What was the aim of JACOBS study?
To assess the capacity of the STM using the digit span technique.

How does the digit span technique work?
Listen to 4 digits - correctly recall in order - if correct, progress to 5 digits - so on until you are incorrect.

What did Jacobs find?
The mean span for digits was 9.3 but 7.3 for letters. Digit span also increased with age.

What does Jacobs study suggest?
It may be easier to recall digits as there are only 9, but 26 letters in the alphabet. People also develop chunking to improve digit span as they age.

UK postcode system.
