Smoking causes cancers in the lungs, mouth and liver. Sunbathing and the use of sunbeds, lack of use of sunscreen. Unhealthy, processed foods with high salt levels. High consumption of alcohol. Lack of exercise and dietry choices. Social media.

Glasgow has the highest rate of cancer cases in the UK and has 20% of the most deprived areas. Manchester has the most McDonalds in the the UK with the most cases in Liverpool too. 34/50 wards in the north west are the most deprived.

What is the link between cancer rates and socio-economic deprivation?
Deprivation rates are high = there is an increased likelihood of smoking, high alcohol consumption and obesity. Survival rates are linked to pre-existing health status - somebody who is already ill may become more susceptible to types of cancers.

What are the direct solutions?
Targets to save 5000 lives per year and increase survival rates. Reduced waiting times in hospitals for more early diagnosis and treatment. Investment in technology, HPV vaccinations for teenage girls and charities such as Cancer Research.

Cervical smear tests are at a 20-year low due to women being embarrassed. However, celebrity endoresement and free waxes are being used to sway the population.

What are the indirect solutions?
Education and health campaigns to raise awareness. Change4Life promote healthy lifestyles and sugar taxes to reduce the consumption of foods high in sugar. Informing the public by putting info on cigarette packs.
