How are Bulk Chemicals Made?
Bulk chemicals such as ammonia are continuously made in large amounts. They are simple and cheap to manufacture.

Fine chemicals such as food flavourings are made in small batches. The quality of fine chemicals must be controlled more carefully than that of a bulk chemical. Expensive and complex to manufacture.

The higher the atom economy the greater the proportion of reactant atoms that end up in the desired product, making it more sustainable.

How Do Waste Products Affect a Chemicals Processes' Sustainability?
If wastes are sent to landfill or dumped in open air or water, it will have negative effects on the environment. Removing, Destroying, Neutralising, and Precipitating waste prevents damage.

If the process produces useful by-products they can be used again, whether it be in the same process or for something else.

If the risks are minimised the process is more likely to be sustainable.

What Does a Catalyst Do?
A catalyst provides an alternative route for a reaction with a lower activation energy. The catalyst may reduce the energy inputs for the reaction and increase its reaction rate.

Some Industrial Processes are Catalysed by a Natural Catalyst. What are Natural Catalysts?
A natural catalyst is an enzyme, every enzyme works best under particular conditions of temperature and pH. There is no point adding an enzyme to a reaction mixture at 300oC if it works best at 37oC.

1. Write out the formula. 2. Use the periodic table to find the relative atomic mass of all the elements in the compound. 3. Add them together.

Make feedstocks from raw materials; Synthesise the products from reactants; Separate products from by-products and waste; Analyse the products and check for purity.

1. Calculate the r.f.m. of each reactant and product. 2. Calculate relative masses of reactants and products by taking into account the numbers used to balance the equation.
