Which metal is the most reactive and which is the least reactive?
Potassium is MR - Gold is LR
1 of 15
What does a metal and water make?
Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
2 of 15
What is a strong acid and what is a weak acid?
Strong acids completely ionise in water, weak acids only partly ionise in water
3 of 15
Name 3 strong acids and 3 weak acids
Hydrochloric acid, Nitric acid, Sulfuric acid, Ethanoic acid, Carbonic acid, Lactic acid
4 of 15
What does an acid and alkali make?
Salt
5 of 15
What is oxidation?
Where electrons are lost to gain oxygen
6 of 15
What is reduction?
Where electrons are gained to lose oxygen
7 of 15
What is displacement?
When a less reactive metal gets replaced by a more reactive one
8 of 15
Name 3 ways you can distinguish the pH of a substance
Litmus paper, pH probe, Universal Indicator
9 of 15
How do you make salt?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid to a beaker, add powdered zinc carbonate to some acid, continue until it is in excess, filter the mixture, evaporate the mixture over a Bunsen burner
10 of 15
What is a salt?
A salt is any compound formed by the neutralisation of an acid by a base
11 of 15
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the separation of substances
12 of 15
How does electrolysis work?
Electrolysis works by breaking down electrolytes. The negatively charged ions called anions are attracted to the positively charged anode. The positively charged ions called cations are attracted to the negatively charged cathodes.
13 of 15
How does extraction by carbon work?
Extraction by carbon works by using carbon in displacement. If the metal is less reactive than carbon, carbon will displace it and the metal will be separated.
14 of 15
What is an ore?
A metal formed with another element to make a compound
