This item covers some properties and chemistry of the transition elements and introduces thermal decomposition and precipitation. The experiments on thermal decomposition allow opportunities to collect and analyse science data, working as an individual or in a group, to analyse results and present the information using scientific conventions and symbols.

A reaction in which a substance is broken down into at least two other substances by heat.

What is the test for Carbon Dioxide?
If limewater is shaken with a sample of the gas produced, the limewater turns milky. This shows that the gas is carbon dioxide.

When will we get a displacement reaction?
If a solution of any soluble transition metal compound is mixed with sodium hydroxide solution.

Describe what happens when a solution of any soluble transition metal compound is mixed with sodium hydroxide solution.
The sodium is the more reactive metal, and displaces the transition metal from its compound. The transition metal hydroxide is produced as a result. As this is insoluble in water it appears as a solid in the liquid. This is a precipitation reaction
