C4 - Purifying and Testing Water

?
What are the three main stages in water purification?
Sedimentation, filtration and chlorination
1 of 9
What happens in sedimentation?
Chemicals are added to make solid particles and bacteria settle out.
2 of 9
What happens in filtration?
A layer of sand on gravel filters out the remaining fine particles; some types of sand filter also remove microbes
3 of 9
What happens in chlorination?
Chlorine is added to kill microbes
4 of 9
How does the purification of water increase global warming?
Because it takes energy to pump and purify
5 of 9
How can dissolved substances in water be removed?
By distillation
6 of 9
What is the problem with distillation?
Takes huge amounts of energy, so it very expensive and it is only used when there is no fresh water
7 of 9
How can water be tested?
With precipitation reactions using aqueous silver nitrate and barium chloride solutions
8 of 9
What is a precipitation reaction?
Two solutions react to form a chemical that does not dissolve.
