Why do all group 7 elements have similar chemical properties?
this is because all of them have 7 electrons in their outer shell.
1 of 16
do halogens exist as diatomic molecules?
yes, they share one pair of electrons in a covalent bond-gives both atoms a full outer shell
2 of 16
As you down do the melting & boiling points decrease?
no, it increases
3 of 16
is chlorine a black solid at room temperature?
no-it is a green gas
4 of 16
is bromine a orange gas at room temperature?
no-it is a red/brown liquid which releases an orange vapour at room temp
5 of 16
Is iodine a dark colored solid at room temp?
yes-it is a dark grey crystalline solid; also it gives out a purple vapour when heated
6 of 16
does the reactivity increase as you go down group 7?
no it decreases as you go down
7 of 16
why does the reactivity decrease as you go down?
halogen needs 1 more electron to have full outer shell. The easier it is for halogen atom to attract an electron=more reactive it is. As u go down the group the outer shell gets further away from nucleas- it gets harder to add the extra electron
8 of 16
Halogens react with alkali metals to form?
salts called metal halides
9 of 16
what other reactions do halogens undergo?
displacement reactions
10 of 16
What state should the reactants be for displacement reactions?
aqueous solution and the salt solution which is also aqueous
11 of 16
what do displacement reactions show?
reactivity trends
12 of 16
How do you know if there's been displacement reaction?
there will be a colour change
13 of 16
if bromine has been displaced what colour does the solution become?
orange
14 of 16
if iodine is displaced what colour does the solution become?
brown
15 of 16
the displacement reactions show what about the reactivity of halogens?
reactivity decreases as u go down group 7
