C4 Flashcards- OCR GATEWAY

?
What charge does the nucleus have?
Positive
1 of 14
What is the atomic number?
The amount of protons in an atom, ie. the bottom number
2 of 14
Define JJ Thomson's atomic theory
Thomson discovered electrons, which showed that the atom could be broken down into smaller pieces, disproving Dalton's theory
3 of 14
Define Rutherford's atomic theory
Ernest Rutherford used experimental evidence to show that an atom must contain a central nucleus. This was further evidence that an atom contained smaller pieces.
4 of 14
Define Bohr's atomic theory
He used experimental evidence to support the idea that electrons occupy particular orbits or shells around the nucleus of an atom.
5 of 14
How would you describe an isotope?
An isotope is a variety of an element that have the same atomic numbers but different mass numbers.
6 of 14
Why is an atom neutral?
Because although the nucleus is positive overall, the electrons are negatively charged and the number of protons + electrons is equal in an atom.
7 of 14
Explain Geiger and Marsden's experiments
A beam of alpha particles was aimed at very thin gold foil, and the positively charged alpha particles were being repelled and deflected by a tiny concentration of positive charge in the atom.
8 of 14
Explain ionic bonding
a metal and non-metal combine by transferring electrons to form positive ions and negative ions which then attract one another.
9 of 14
Which compounds conduct electricity when molten?
magnesium oxide and sodium chloride conduct electricity when molten.
10 of 14
Why is the melting point of sodium chloride is lower than that of magnesium oxide
Na+ ions are larger than Mg2+ and cannot get as close to the negatively charged ions,
11 of 14
What is covalent bonding between?
Non metals
12 of 14
Why are group 1 metals called alkali metals?
Because they form alkaline solutions when they react with water.
13 of 14
Describe the reaction of group 1 metals with water
Hydrogen is formed, an alkali is formed which is the hydroxide of the metal, the reactivity with water increases down Group 1 • potassium gives a lilac flame.
