C3 flashcards

?
What do exothermic reactions do?
they release energy to the surroundings and cause temperature rise
1 of 17
What do endothermic reactions do?
they absorb energy from the surroundings and cause temperature drop
2 of 17
What factors affect the cost of making a drug?
the drug can be more expensive if the materials are costly, research and developing the drug can take time and cost a lot of money and finally high qualified staff are needed or expensive high standard machines so this affects the cost of the drug
3 of 17
What are the uses of Buckminister fullerene?
it is used in drugs such as new h.i.v treatment as it gets rid of illness/ pain all over the body
4 of 17
Why do all substances have high melting points?
...... has a high melting point because ...... has strong intermolecular forces that need a lot of heat to break
5 of 17
Why does graphite conduct electricity
graphite contains delocalised electrons (free electrons) these electrons can move through the graphite, carrying charge from place to place and allowing graphite to conduct electricity
6 of 17
What is the criteria for a batch process?
firstly; it can make a product on demand on a small scale and it can be changed to make a variety of products
7 of 17
How do you find percentage yield?
actual yield / predicted yield x 100
8 of 17
What are allotropes?
allotropes are different forms of the same element with atoms arranged in different structures
9 of 17
How does the limiting reactant affect a reaction?
the limiting reactant determines the maximum amount of product that can be made
10 of 17
How does the collision theory explain rates?
........... increases the frequency of successful collisions and therefore the rate because ..................
11 of 17
What is a catalyst?
a catalyst is a substance that changes the rate of a reaction without being used up to speed up reactions
12 of 17
What happens when concentration is increased in a reaction?
the particles will be closer together and will collide more frequently so there will be many more successful collisions
13 of 17
What happens when the temperature is increased in a reaction?
it causes an increase in the kinetic energy of the particles so they will move a lot faster and the rate of reaction will be faster
14 of 17
What happens when the surface area of the reactants is increased?
if the surface area is larger the reaction speeds up. powdered solids have a larger surface area than lumps of solid so there are more particles on the surface for the reactants to collide with
15 of 17
What is a limiting reactant?
a limiting reactant is the reactant not in excess that gets used up by the end of the reaction
16 of 17
How do reactions take place?
they take place by particles colliding
