Which metals rust and which corrode?
Iron and steel rust, other metals corrode.
1 of 7
What accelerates rusting?
Acid rain and salt water accelerate rusting.
2 of 7
What is the word equation for rusting?
Iron + oxygen + water -> hydrated iron oxide
3 of 7
Does aluminum corrode?
Aluminium doesn't corrode in moist air because it has a protective layer of aluminium oxide.
4 of 7
What is the difference between aluminium and steel in car bodies?
Aluminium is lighter and more resistant to corrosion than steel. However steel costs less and is stronger.
5 of 7
Advantages of recyling the materials from old cars?
Less mining, saves finite resources. Less crude oil is needed to makenew plastics. Less waste means less lanfill. Fewer toxic materials are dumped.
6 of 7
Disadvantages of recyling the materials from old cars?
Fewer mines built and fewer mining jobs created. Difficult to seperate materials. Some techniques create pollution. Recyling process is very expensive.
