What is the word equation for the haber process?
nitorgen + hydrogen ammonia
1 of 16
What is the balanced symbol equation for the haber process?
N + 3H 2NH
2 of 16
What are the optimum conditions for the Haber Process?
Using a catalyst made of iron. Tempurature of 450'C. High pressure(20MPa). Recycle an unreacted nitrogen and hydrogen.
3 of 16
In the Haber Process why is using an iron catalyst effective?
Iron catalysts increase the reaction rate (rate of succesful collisions) but not the percentage yeild.
4 of 16
Why is the optimum tempurature around 450'C in the Haber Process?
It is 450'C because even though the yeild isnt very high the rate of reaction is fairly quick, so it makes up for it.
5 of 16
Why dont the manufactures increase the pressure and the tempurature in the Haber Process?
If they increase the tempurature it will increase the energy cost and if they increase the pressure it will increase the plant costs.
6 of 16
What are bases? Are bases soluble?
Metal oxides and metal hydroxides. Some bases are soluble in water and these are called alkalis.
7 of 16
Where does neutralisation take place?
Neutralisation takes place when an acid and a base react to make salt and water.
8 of 16
What is the word equation for neutralisation?
acid + base -> salt + water
9 of 16
How can you tell when neutralisation has taken place?
You can tell when neautralisation has taken place when the pH value change.
10 of 16
What is the reaction invovled in neutralisation?
H + OH H O
11 of 16
What do acids react with to make salts?
Bases and metal carbonate.
12 of 16
What are the two word equations for making salt?
acid + base -> salt + water. Acid + metal carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide.
13 of 16
How do farmers increase their crop yeild?
They increase it by replacing essential elements used by the previous crop or providing extra essential elements. They provide nitrogen that is incorporated into plant protein resulting in increased growth.
14 of 16
Where do fertilisers create problems? What are these problems.
They create problems in ponds, lakes and rivers because they encourage algae growth leading to eutrophication.
15 of 16
How does eutrophication happen?
fertilsers are washed off feilds, fertilisers in water increase the nitrate&phospate levels, algea bloom grows quickly in the presence of these chemicals, algae blocks the sunlight to oxygen producing plants, bacteria uses up oxygen, most organisms die
