C2 - Atoms, Compounds, Isotopes and Bonding

  • Isotopes
  • Chemical bonds
  • Atomic numbers
?
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons.
1 of 12
What is the mass number?
Total number of protrons and neutrons.
2 of 12
How are compounds made?
Compounds are made when atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined together.
3 of 12
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are different forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
4 of 12
What is ionic bonding?
Atoms lose or gain electrons to form charged particles (ions).
5 of 12
What structure do ionic compounds have?
The ions have a regular lattice arrangement. There are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions in all directions.
6 of 12
What are the properties of ionic compounds?
High melting point, high boiling point, easily dissolved in water.
7 of 12
What is the formula for ionic bonding?
(+1) + (-1) = 0
8 of 12
Which groups have a positive ion?
Groups 1 and 2 in the periodic table.
9 of 12
Which groups have a negative ion?
Groups 6 and 7 in the periodic table.
10 of 12
What are covalent bonds?
Where atoms share electrons.
11 of 12
How are covalent bonds shown?
in a dot and cross diagram (outer shell only).
