What is a covalent bond?
a shared pair of electrons
1 of 6
Why are covalent bonds strong?
Because there's a strong electrostatic attraction between the positive nuclei of the atoms & the negative electrons in each shared pair
2 of 6
Why do small covalent molecules have low melting & boiling points?
Atoms within the molecules are held together by strong covalent bonds but there's weak intermolecular forces between these molecules-so little energy is required to separate these molecules & overcome forces-why there's low melting/boiling points
3 of 6
Most small covalent molecules are at which states at room temperature?
they are usually gases or liquids at room temperature
4 of 6
Can these molecules conduct electricity?Why?
No because they don't have free electrons or ions-i.e there's no overall electric charge
5 of 6
What are the pros and cons to a ball and stick model?(its a 3D model)
help you visualise structure of these molecules and more realistic than 2D drawings. But theer aare massive gaps between electrons-in reality this is where the electron clouds would be interacting.Bonds aren't sticks & you can't see bond strength
