What is created by the Haber process?
Ammonia - a fertiliser.

What conditions are used for the Haber process?
Iron catalyst increases the rate of reaction/ high pressure increases the yield/ high temperature increases rate of reaction but can also break down ammonia (because reaction reversible).

Why might the cost of the Haber process increase? Or decrease?
Increase: pressure and temperature raised. Decrease: when catalyst used and reactants recycled.

When does neutralisation take place?
When an acid reacts with a base and the products are salt and water.

There are no free H+ giving the solution a pH of 7

Why must farmers dissolve their fertilisers in water before they are used?
So the roots of the plants can absorb the dissolved substances

How do fertilisers increase crop yields?
Fertilisers contain essential elements including nitrogen which is used for growth.

What happens during eutrophication?
Fertilisers are washed into rivers increasing the levels of nitrogen and phosphate. Algae then grows quickly and blocks the sunlight to the oxygen-producing plants. Aerobic bacteria uses the oxygen and feed off decay most plants. Most organisms die.

Descrice the process of making a fertiliser form sulfuric acid and ammonium nitrate.
The ammonium nitrate is titrates with the acid using a single indicator. Another batch is made since the solution is contaminated with indicator solution. Titrations are repeated to find the correct quantities. The fertiliser is then dissolved.

How can salt be mined?
Mining from the ground/rocks, or pumping water that is saturated with dissolved salt.

Describe the electrolysis of brine.
Hydrogen is made at the cathode and chlorine is made at the anode. Hydrogen and chlorine are reactive so they need to be collected before they react. Electrons migrate from from the anode to the cathode.

What can sodium hydroxide be used for?
It is used in plastics, paints, soaps, medicines and food additives
