What happens when two or more elements react together?
A compound is formed
1 of 11
How do elements join together?
By sharing electrons or transferring electrons to achieve stable electronic structures.
2 of 11
What are noble gases?
They have a stable electronic structure.
3 of 11
What is it called when atoms of non metallic elements join together?
Sharing electrons it is called covalent bonding.
4 of 11
What happens when metallic elements react with non-mettalic elements?
They produce ionic compounds.
5 of 11
In ionic bonding what happens to the metal atom?
It loses it's electrons to become a positive ion.
6 of 11
In ionic bonding what happens to the non-metal atom?
They gain electrons to become a negative ion.
7 of 11
What do ions have?
A stable electronic structure the same as a noble gas.
8 of 11
What happens to the oppisitely charged ions in the ionic compound?
The attract each other and it is called ionic bonding.
9 of 11
How many electrons do Group 1 have in their outer shell?
1 and when it is lost they become positive.
10 of 11
How many electrons do Group 7 have in their outer shell?
7 and when one is gained they become negative.
