What chemical is often used in perfume?
Esters
1 of 8
How are esters made?
By esterification. You heat carboxylic acid with an alcohol.
2 of 8
What is the esterification equation?
Acid + Alcohol = Ester + Water
3 of 8
What properties do perfumes need?
Easily evaporates - needs to smell! Non-toxic - no poison! Doesn't react with water - would react with sweat! Doesn't irritate the skin - or couldn't be applied directly. Insoluble in water - would wash off
4 of 8
Describe a solid's structure
Strong forces between bonds. Regular lattice structure. Definite shape and volume - don't flow. Particles vibrate - hotter = more vibation.
5 of 8
Describe a liquid's structure
Some force of attraction between bonds. Free to move past each other, but tend to stick together. Don't keep a definite shape and will flow to the bottom of a container to fill it. Particles are constantly moving with random motion. Hotter = faster
6 of 8
Describe a gases structure
No force of attraction between them. Free to move - only interaction is collision. Don't keep a definite shape. Move constantly with random motion. Hotter = faster
