What is phase 1 of the evolution of the atmosphere?
Volcanoes gave out steam and CO2 - surface originally molten. Formed a thin crust but atmosphere mainly CO2 and water vapour (WV condensed to form oceans)
1 of 14
What is phase 2 of the evolution of the atmosphere?
Green plants evolved and gave out oxygen - Some CO2 dissolved into oceans, plants evolved and photosynthesised, CO2 went in fossil fuels + sedimentary rocks, N2 increased from oxygen reacting with ammonia - not reactive so increased.
2 of 14
What is phase 3 of the evolution of the atmosphere?
Oxygen killed off organisms that couldn't tolerate it, formed ozone layer, enabled complex organisms to evolve.
3 of 14
Whats the amounts of Nitrogen, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere today?
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.035% carbon dioxide
4 of 14
What adds to carbon dioxide in the air?
Respiration, combustion and decay of plants and animals (remove oxygen)
5 of 14
What removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
Photosynthesis
6 of 14
Should the process of photosynthesis balance out the addition of carbon dioxide?
Yes. But humans have upset the balance.
7 of 14
How have humans added more carbon dioxide to the carbon cycle?
The population is increasing - more people respiring and more energy used for everyday things. more and more countries becoming industrialised and using more energy (cars, phones, planes). More land needed for houses and food - Deforestation.
8 of 14
What is acid rain caused by?
Sulfur Dioxide and Oxides of Nitrogen released when fossil fuels are burned. Mix with clouds to form dilute sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Falls as acid rain - power stations and internal combustion engines are main cause
9 of 14
What does acid rain do?
Kills fish, trees and statues. Lakes become acidic killing plants and animals. Kills trees and damages limestone and statues
10 of 14
What do oxides of nitrogen also cause?
Photochemical smog.
11 of 14
Why is carbon monoxide bad?
Stops blood doing proper job of carrying oxygen
12 of 14
What reduces the amount of carbon monoxide released by cars?
Catalytic converters.
13 of 14
Reaction in catalytic converters?
carbon monoxide + nitrogen oxide = nitrogen + carbon dioxide
