Atoms have a nucleus which contains it's protons and neutrons. The there is the electrons which lie on the outer shell of the atom. Atoms have outer shell which love to be full of electrons.
1 of 5
Outer shells
Outer shells can only have a certain amount of electrons. the first outer shell can only hold 2 electrons and then the rest can only hold 8 on each one.
2 of 5
Protons
Protons are positively charged and have the same amount as there are neutrons.
3 of 5
Neutrons
Neutrons are neutral so don't have a charge. Also there are the same amount to neutrons as electrons and are all in the nucleus.
4 of 5
Electrons
The electrons move around the nucleus, and are negatively charged. Even thought they are small they cover a lot of space. The shells that electrons occupy explain the whole of chemistry.
