what was the early atmosphere made up of?
mostly CO2, water vapour with virtually no oxygen
1 of 10
how did the oceans form?
when the water vapour condensed when the earth cooled
2 of 10
how did the early CO2 dissolve?
a lot of it dissolved into the oceans, green plants also removed carbon dioxide and produced oxygen by photosynthesis
3 of 10
what is the earths atmosphere made up of today?
nitrogen 78% oxygen 21% argon 1%
4 of 10
how is carbon monoxide produced?
if there's not enough oxygen available when fuel burns, this is called incomplete burning
5 of 10
in what form does sulfur dioxide leave the atmosphere?
acid rain
6 of 10
how is nitrogen monoxide formed?
when nitrogen and oxygen in the air are exposed to very high temperatures, this happens in car engines
7 of 10
how is nitrogen dioxide formed?
once the nitrogen monoxide is in the air, it goes on to react with more oxygen, producing nitrogen dioxide
8 of 10
what do catalytic converters in cars do to nitrogen monoxide?
converts nitrogen monoxide into nitrogen and oxygen, this is a reduction reaction as the nitrogen loses oxygen
9 of 10
what do catalytic converters do to carbon monoxide?
converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide by adding oxygen, this is an oxidation reaction
