Why are fossil fuels finite resources?
Because they are being used up faster than they are being made or they are being made extremely slowly
1 of 35
What is a Hydrocarbon?
A molecule made just of hydrogen and carbon
2 of 35
Which part of the fractional distillation column is the coolest?
The top, the oil that doesn't boil sinks to the bottom like bitumen and other oils boil and their gases float up the camber. Example: petrol
3 of 35
What are the problems with transporting crude oil?
Oil slicks damage birds feathers and they eventually die, also the clean up damages wildlife
4 of 35
What does cracking do to large alkane molecules?
Turns them into smaller alkane and alkene molecules
5 of 35
What is the word equation for complete combustion?
Methane+Oxygen -------> Carbon dioxide+Water
6 of 35
What is the word equations for incomplete combustion?
Fuel+Oxygen -------> Carbon Monoxide+Water OR Fuel+Oxygen --------> Carbon+Water
7 of 35
Which produces more energy complete or incomplete combustion?
Complete combustion
8 of 35
What is the balanced symbol equation for complete combustion?
〖CH〗_4 + 〖2O〗_2 ------> 〖CO〗_2 + 〖4H〗_2O (IF THERE IS A DASH BEFORE THE NUMBER IT IS ATOMIC)
9 of 35
What is the balanced equation for incomplete combustion? (Carbon monoxide + Water)
〖2CH〗_4 + 〖3O〗_2 ----> 2CO + 〖4H〗_2O (IF THERE IS A DASH BEFORE THE NUMBER IT IS ATOMIC)
10 of 35
What is the balanced equation for incomplete combustion? (Carbon + Water)
〖CH〗_4 + O_2 -----> C + 〖2H〗_2O (IF THERE IS A DASH BEFORE THE NUMBER IT IS ATOMIC)
11 of 35
What is clean air?
78% Nitrogen 21% Oxygen 0.035% Carbon dioxide and 0.905% Other gases
12 of 35
Why has the amount of carbon dioxide increased over the last few centuries?
Deforestation (less photosynthesis) and Increase population
13 of 35
Why wasn't Nitrogen removed from the original atmosphere?
Because it is extremely nonreactive
14 of 35
What problems does Sulpher dioxide cause?
Acid rain and problems for people with asthma
15 of 35
What do catalytic converters change Carbon monoxide into?
carbon dioxide
16 of 35
What gases react on the surface of the catalytic converter?
Nitric Oxide + Carbon Monoxide
17 of 35
What is the balanced equation for the reaction between Nitric Oxide + Carbon Monoxide on the surface of the catalytic converter?
2CO + 2NO --------> N_2+〖2CO〗_2 (DASHES BEFORE NUMBERS MEAN IT IS AN ATOMIC NUMBER)
18 of 35
What is the difference between and Alkane and an Alkene?
Alkane has single covalent bonds and Alkenes have double covalent bonds.
19 of 35
What happens to bromine water if an alkene is present?
It turns colourless
20 of 35
Which molecules are saturated?
Alkane molecules are saturated, Alkene molecules are not saturated as they have double covalent bonds so can hold more molecules of hydrogen
21 of 35
For many alkene monomers to react together to make a polymer, what must there be?
High pressure and a catalyst
22 of 35
How can you recognise a polymer from it's display formula?
The pattern repeats ever two carbon atoms, two brackets on the end with extended bonds through them and an 'n' after the brackets
23 of 35
What is GORE-TEX made from?
PTFE (polytetrafluorethene)
24 of 35
Why is GORE-TEX better than nylon for outdoor wear?
Nylon is not breathable, GORE-TEX is, the holes in the PTFE are to small for water to pass through but large enough for water vapour from sweat to get through!
25 of 35
Why do scientist want to make bio degradable polymers?
Polymers that are non-biodegradable fill up landsites and waste crude oil, they are also extremely hard to recycle
26 of 35
What is it called when protein in meat and eggs is changed when they are cooked?
Denaturing
27 of 35
What is the word equation for the decomposing of Baking Powder
Sodium Hydrogencarbonate ----> Sodium Carbonate + Carbon Dioxide + Water
28 of 35
What two important parts do emulsifiers have?
They have a hydrophilic part that loves water and a hydrophobic part that loves oils and fats, they keep the oil and water together
29 of 35
What reacts with Alcohol to make an ester?
An acid
30 of 35
What is the word equation for an ester
Alcohol + Acid ----> Ester + Water
31 of 35
What properties should a perfume have?
Non toxic, Evaporates easily, not irritable and is insoluble
32 of 35
Why don't paint particles separate?
Because they are scattered and dispersed around the mixture
33 of 35
What is thermochromic paint?
Paint that changes colour at different temperatures
34 of 35
What is Phosphorescent Paint?
Pain that glows in the dark!
