Where did the CO2 that made up most of earths early atmosphere come from?
CO2 came from the gases that volcanoes gave out after they erupted
1 of 21
What happened to the atmosphere when green plants evolved?
They removed CO2 from the atmosphere and produced oxygen by photosynthesis
2 of 21
What happened when the green plant died?
The carbon they had removed from air (CO2) became locked up in sedimentary rocks as insoluble carbonates and fossil fuels
3 of 21
What happened when there was a build up of oxygen?
Complex organisms evolved
4 of 21
What three main gases is the current atmosphere made of and in what percentage are they found?
Nitrogen 78%, oxygen 21% and argon 1%
5 of 21
What are the six pollutants?
Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate carbon, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide
6 of 21
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound that contains only two elements- carbon and hydrogen
7 of 21
Name the main element that makes up coal
Carbon
8 of 21
When hydrocarbon fuel burns, what substance in the air do the hydrogen and carbon atoms combine with?
They combine with oxygen to make water and carbon dioxide
9 of 21
What removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
Plants use up CO2 from the air when they photosynthesise. CO2 also dissolves in rainwater, seas, lakes and rivers
10 of 21
What atoms make up carbon monoxide?
One oxygen atom and one carbon atom
11 of 21
What conditions is carbon monoxide produced?
It is produced when there is not enough oxygen when the fuel burns. This is called incomplete burning
12 of 21
What are the particles of carbon known as and what kind of pollution do they cause?
Particulate carbon. They just float around and then deposit themselves as soot (horrible black dust)
13 of 21
How is the pollutant sulfur dioxide produced?
This is produced when fuels with impurities are burnt as some fuels contain traces of the element sulfur
14 of 21
How does sulfur dioxide leave the atmosphere?
Sulphur dioxide reacts with the moisture from the clouds to form sulphuric acid which then leaves the atomosphere in the form of acid rain
15 of 21
What effects does acid rain have on the environment?
Causes lakes to be acidic, killing plants and animals. Kills trees and damages building and statues made from certain stone e.g limestone
16 of 21
When fossil fuels are burnt, how is nitrogen dioxide produced?
Nitrogen in the air reacts with oxygen in the air to produce nitrogen dioxide as fossil fuels burn at such high temperatures
17 of 21
What effects do nitrogen oxides have on the environment?
They react with the moisture in clouds to produce dilute nitric acid which falls down as acid rain.
18 of 21
What do catalytic converters do?
They convert harmful nitrogen monoxide into harmless nitrogen and oxygen. They also convert the toxic gas carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide (by adding oxygen)
19 of 21
What could everyone do to reduce carbon dioxide pollution?
Use less electricity
20 of 21
How do MOT test help combat air pollution?
The MOT test checked car emissions, as there is a legal limit on the amount of polluting emissions that cars can give out
