C1 3.1 and C1 3.2 Flash Cards

?
What part of the earth do metals come from?
The Earth's crust
1 of 23
What is a metal ore?
A metal ore contains enough of the metal to make it economic to extract
2 of 23
What is reduction?
The removal of oxygen from a compound
3 of 23
What makes gold, silver and platinum different to other metals?
They are so unreactive that we find them in the Earth as the elements themselves. We call this their native state
4 of 23
What is a metal oxide?
A metal which is combined with oxygen
5 of 23
What is the reactivity series?
The reactivity series lists the metals in order of their reactivity
6 of 23
How is the reactivity series layed out?
The most reactive are at the top and the least reactive are at the bottom
7 of 23
How can we extract metals above carbon in the reactivity series?
Electrolysis
8 of 23
How can we extract metals above carbon in the reactivity series?
Reduction using carbon
9 of 23
Where are ores mined from?
The ground
10 of 23
What happens if the ore is little compared to the amount of rock it is found in?
It may need to be concentrated before it is extracted and the purified
11 of 23
Why can't we use pure iron for anything?
It is too soft to be useful
12 of 23
Where does reduction using carbon take place?
In a blast furnace
13 of 23
One property of low carbon steel?
Easily shaped
14 of 23
One property of high carbon steel?
Very hard
15 of 23
One property of high carbon stainless steel?
Resistant to corrosion
16 of 23
What do we call a metal that is mixed with other elements?
An alloy
17 of 23
How do we extract iron from iron ore?
By reducing it using carbon in a blast furnace
18 of 23
Why is iron from a blast furnace very brittle?
Because it contains impurities, such as carbon
19 of 23
How do we control the properties in steel?
Change the amount of carbon within it
20 of 23
What gas is given off when we heat the metal oxide with carbon during reduction?
Carbon dioxide
21 of 23
How is copper extracted from copper ores?
Firat, the copper ore is ground up into a powder. Then, they are mixed with water and a chemical which makes the copper compound repel water. Air is then bubbled through the mixture and the copper compound floats on the top as a froth
22 of 23
What two factors depend on whether a metal is worth extracting?
How easy it is to extract from its ore, and how much metal the ore contains
