C1.6 Plant Oils

?
What are the 2 ways you can extract plant oils?
Crushing and Pressing, Distillation
1 of 9
Explain how crushing and pressing works?
1)the plant/fruit is crushed between metal plates (2)when pressed it is mixed with water and plant material. 3)then filtered 4)to remove water they use distillation as water has a low boiling point or centrifugation
2 of 9
How does centrifugation work?
The products are spun at high speeds and causes the water and oil to seperate
3 of 9
How does distillation work?
1)Water is heated to make steam.2)steam evaporates the oils from the plant materials.3)The oil vapour is cooled and condensed back into a liquid
4 of 9
Why does the oil float on top of the water?
Because the oil is less dense than water
5 of 9
What are the 3 uses for plant oils?
Food,Cooking,Fuels
6 of 9
Why is plant oil good for cooking?
Vegetable oils have higher Boiling points so can cook at higher temperatures, making cooking quicker aso it gives more colour and flavour
7 of 9
What can too much food cooked in oil make you?
Obese
8 of 9
What do you add to water and oil to mix them?what is this called?
emulsifier,emulsion
