All elements are made of atoms. An atom consists of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons.
Atom
1 of 6
A substance formed by the chemical union of two or more elements.
Compound
2 of 6
When metals react with non-metals, electrons are transferred from the metal atoms to the non-metal atoms, forming ions.
Ionic
3 of 6
A bond between atoms formed when atoms share electrons to achieve a full outer shell of electrons.
Covalent
4 of 6
The strong attraction between closely packed positive metal ions and a 'sea' of delocalised electrons.
Metallic
5 of 6
Electrically charged particle, formed when an atom or molecule gains or loses electrons.
Ion
