Flexible Workforce
A business can reduce staffing costs by creating more flexible working, and there are a number of ways in which a business can attempt to increase the level of workforce flexibility. eg. multi-skiling, part-time staff.

Multi-skilling
Training employees to do several different jobs/skills within the business. This gives greater utilisation of employees and prevents disruption when staff are absent.

Part-time Staff
Allows greater flexibility for businesses to stay open longer, as shifts can be shared.

Temporary Staff
Employed for a specific period of time only. eg. covering someone of maternity leave.

Staff are able to vary the hours they work to meet both the needs of the business and to some extent their own needs.

Zero-hours Contracts
Business doesn't guarantee any work until there is demand necessary for them to be working.

Outsourcing/Subcontracting
When the business finds another business to complete tasks that employees may have undertaken themselves in the past, eg. cleaning services or catering services.

What is Dismissal?
When an employee leaves their job due to gross misconduct, broken their contract or their performance is inadequate.

What is meant by Redundancy?
Employees have to leave because their job function is no longer needed by the business.

What is Recruitment?
Is to employ and retain the best possible human resources.

What is a Job Description?
A summary of the main duties and responsibilities associated with an identified job.

Person Specification
Identifies the skills, knowledge and experience a successful candidate is likely to have.

How does a business decide what training method to use?
They take into consideration the size of the business, the cost of the training and the time available to spend on training.

On-the-Job Training
Learning the task at the place of employment by watching an experienced employee.

Off-the-Job Training
Takes place externally away from the actual job, and often the training is expensive as run by experts.

Apprenticeships
Training on the job and in college on a day-release system.

Courses
Send employees away on a course for additional training. Eg. how to use a new piece of machinery.

What is meant by Span of Control?
The number of employees for whom a manager is responsible for.

Concerned with the way in which responsibility for employees is organised within the business. (Who is responsible for who)

Delegation
The assignment of responsibility or authority to another person to carry out specific activities.

The forces that encourage and drive people to work harder.

Theories of Motivation
Motivational theories attempt to define what motivates people.

Taylor's Theory
The idea that we are motivated by money. Paying employees per product they make motivates them to produce more, however this can cause quality to fall.

Mayo's Theory
Hawthorne Studies- altered the working conditions, and then staff were asked for feedback and it was this sense of involvement that motivated the workers.

Absenteeism
The number of staff absent as a percentage of the total number of staff employeed.

Labour Turnover
The number of staff who leave each year as a percentage of total staff employed.

Productivity of Labour
The total level of output in a given period divided by the total number of staff employed.

Job Enrichment and Job Rotation
Offering a range of tasks to an employee. And job rotation is completing different tasks throughout the shift.

Whats the difference between an autocratic, democratic and Laissez-faire leader?
Autocratic leader makes all major decisions and there is little worker involvement. Democratic leaders also the workforce some control over decision making. And Laissez-faire leaders have no control over decisions, leaving the workforce to make them.
