What is management and what are the 4 basic functions of management?
Management is the general admin of a business, day to day operations. Planning, Organising, Leading and Coordinating.

This describes how a business is guided, how a person or people motivate their employees and positively influence them in order to bring success to the business.

What are the two most common types of leadership?
Democratic and Autocratic.

What is a democratic leadership?
Empowering employees by involving them in the decision making process. The leader consults staff but has the ultimate decision. Once tasks are set workers decide how best to complete it.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a democratic leadership?
+Improve staff motivation, -Slows down decision making process, +Encourage more team work.

When are democratic leadership styles often used?
In smaller businesses where there is a shorter chain of command and less staff.

What is an autocratic leadership?
This is a dictatorial style of leadership where workers are set a task and told how to do it + when to complete it. Often, without consultation or participation in the decision.

What are the advantages of an autocratic leadership?
Easy to learn and reinforce staff of, Allows management to take control in hard situations, Good for inexperienced staff,

What are the disadvantages of an autocratic leadership?
Can decrease motivation towards staff, Workforce is heavily dependent on their leader, Significant work burden for leader.

What businesses often use autocratic leaderships?
Large businesses such as factories where there are often low skilled workers.

What is a paternalistic leadership style?
Often referred to as 'father knows best' is one which allows for consultation with employees on a given task but the decision as to how to carry it out is made by the leader. Similar to autocratic.

What is laissez-fiare leadership?
This is when employees are empowered to carry out a given set task with the minimum interference from the manager. The leader can give advice and guidance when asked for by employees.

What type of organisations does laissez-fiare work?
This works well in large organisations that may have many layers of management below the business leader.

What are the advantages of this type of leadership?
Motivates employees and encourages team work, May set challenges for employees, releases pressure from manager/leader.

What are the disadvantages of this type of leadership?
Staff need to have the knowledge and capability, Can be easy for staff to become confused, Some staff may become annoyed/jealous if their role isn't what they want.

What is meant by span of control?
The amount of control the manager has, e.g sales manager may be responsible for three sales advisors and so the span of control is three.
