what was the Suez Crisis?
after Egyptian President Colonel Nasser nationalised the Suez canal, Britain and France agreed to attack Egypt for control over the canal.

why did Britain go to Suez?
80%of Western Europe's oil came through the canal. Eden was anti-appeasement. Suez was used for trade links with the commonwealth. Eden wanted Britain to deal with world affairs. belief that Nasser was a danger to the middle East and Africa.

Britain forced to withdraw with sanctions. threatened the Anglo-American relationship. showed Britain's declining role in world affairs. climate for retreat from Empire. led to Eden's resignation.

Eden had previously been Foreign Policy minister so should have been an expert. unpopular decision- people refused to go back on active service.

Bluestreak- an air launch missile. but soviet aircraft defences had improved so they needed an effective way to deliver weapons to Russia in war.

invested in American Polaris (submarine). offered America a nuclear base in Scotland.

Polaris was abandoned so Britain wasted money. protests in Glasgow over nuclear base and pressure from newly formed CND.

speech in south Africa 1960 about a call for decolonisation and recognition of independence movements.

changes in the commonwealth. empires were old fashioned. was a process that was going to happen-perhaps Macmillan was ready for decolonisation because of his focus on nuclear technology.

trade in commonwealth was decreasing. it would help economy recover from the war and help modernisation. economically they fell behind France, Germany, and Japan.

America wanted Britain in so it could share the intentions of the EEC. industrial action resulted in Britain being regarded as the "sick man of Europe". he was protective of France. confusion over the commonwealth position
