The Slave Trade
Provided market for Brit goods. Labour force for sugar and tobacco. facilitated the import of cotton and sugar to brit when returning. decline in support early 19th cent. Abolished 1807. need for new trade routes encouraged looking beyond the empire.

Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Suez Canal, Zanzibar and the lease of Weihaihei

Singapore
Ships going from China to Brit could stop and trade. All nationality ships could docked without being charged. Acquired spices from Malay without visiting high taxed Dutch ports. New era of imperial trade.

Hong Kong
British ships could unload cargo avoiding import duties and then goods could be transported by other ports by inland waterways.

Shanghai
Opened up the interior of China. In the mouth of the Yangtze river.

Suez Canal
Colonised Egypt meant easy access. Opened up new safe and strategic trade route. Better quality of goods due to reduced travel time. Focus on geographic strategy rather than trade.

Zanzibar
Navy power allowed Brit to have greater influence. First involved to stop slave trade and keep trade routes safe around Africa. Goods taken from coastal to middle east Africa. Trade relied on slaves and was connected to trade routes in Africa.

Lease of Weihaiwei
no commercial value and purely represented Britain's strategic interests. Same to east Africa restrict Germans influence. Brit demanded port nearby to over see developments of Port Arthur. Russia took over port Arthur in China for commercial interest

Trade with Americas, India and the Far East
China= Provided silk tea and porcelain. America= each others largest trading partner since 1778-1781. Latin America= independence from Iberian colonial system led to trading links. India=provided raw materials and market for brit goods

Transformed Britain to an urban industrialised society. this stimulated the export of brit goods. decline of rural workforce lead to the need to import more food

Coal and Textiles
Enormous impact of pattern of trade. Coal= Vital for fuelling industrial rev. Textiles= principal product that Britain exported. increased both production and exports
